Sources close to the organization revealed that the offer — believed to be a combination of a contract extension and performance incentives — was designed to lock down the 22-year-old ace long-term. But in a bold and unexpected decision, Skenes declined, citing “unfinished business” and a desire to earn every step forward on his own terms.
“I came to Pittsburgh to build something special,” Skenes said in a brief statement. “I’m not chasing the money — I’m chasing a championship. And we’re not done yet.”
The offer, reportedly spearheaded by bench coach Don Kelly with backing from veteran players and team leadership, was seen by many as a vote of confidence in Skenes’ future. The right-hander has been electric on the mound this season, leading the Pirates’ rotation and drawing comparisons to some of the game’s elite arms.
This bold rejection is likely to stir debate across the league — is it loyalty, confidence, or a calculated bet on a future even bigger payday?
