The Chase Center erupted with excitement and admiration today as Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry made a life-changing announcement that transcends the world of basketball. In a heartfelt press conference held ahead of the team’s practice, Curry revealed that he is donating his entire $18.9 million bonus and sponsorship earnings to fund the construction of a homeless shelter in Akron, Ohio — a project aimed at creating long-term housing and support for hundreds of people in need.

The donation will fully finance the building of 150 housing units and 300 shelter beds, designed to provide both temporary and permanent refuge for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. In addition to shelter, the facility will offer job training, mental health support, and addiction recovery programs to help residents rebuild their lives.

“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up, and I knew if I ever had the means, I’d give back in a meaningful way,” Curry said, his voice filled with emotion. “No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk, in a car, or in fear of where they’ll lay their head next. This project is about dignity, opportunity, and hope.”

While Curry’s philanthropic efforts have been widely recognized over the years through the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation he co-founded with his wife, Ayesha Curry, this latest move takes his community impact to a whole new level — particularly because the city of Akron is not where he plays or currently lives. The decision to support Akron was personal.

“It’s bigger than basketball. I may be known as a Bay Area guy, but I carry stories from across the country — and Akron’s struggles hit me in a unique way,” Curry said.

Akron city officials and nonprofit housing organizations were quick to express their gratitude. Mayor Shammas Malik called the donation “a godsend,” adding, “This is more than a gift — it’s a legacy. Stephen Curry’s generosity will have a generational impact on our most vulnerable residents.”

The shelter, named “The Hope Center for Families,” is scheduled to break ground this fall and expected to open in early 2026. The complex will include child-friendly areas, community gardens, and on-site medical services — all designed to provide more than just a roof, but a pathway to stability.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement praising Curry’s actions: “Stephen continues to lead both on and off the court. His commitment to social justice and community development sets an example for athletes everywhere.”

Social media exploded with support from fans, celebrities, and fellow athletes. LeBron James, who also hails from Akron, reposted the news on Instagram with the caption: “Much love and respect to my brother @stephencurry30 for always showing heart. Akron appreciates you.”

As Curry left the podium, reporters asked if he had plans for further projects of this kind. He simply smiled and said, “When you’re blessed, you bless others. This is just the beginning.”
