Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed profound admiration for Riccardo Calafiori, the club’s recent defensive acquisition from Bologna. Arteta highlighted the Italian defender’s versatility and readiness to embrace Arsenal’s vision, underscoring the strategic importance of his signing.
Calafiori’s adaptability across defensive roles was a significant factor in Arsenal’s decision to invest £42 million in the 22-year-old. Arteta emphasized that Calafiori’s experience in Italy showcased his capability to occupy various positions effectively. He remarked, “He has the capacity to occupy different spaces really comfortably. He has already done that in Italy. That’s why we signed him.” Arteta further praised Calafiori’s defensive prowess, energy, and commitment, noting his bravery and desire to influence play positively, regardless of his position on the field.
The enthusiasm was mutual. Upon engaging in initial discussions with Arteta and Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, Calafiori was immediately convinced of the club’s project. He expressed his eagerness to join, stating, “I was really convinced to come here. For me, it is the best project that I could have to improve as a player.” Calafiori’s determination was evident as he awaited the finalization of negotiations, ready to contribute to Arsenal’s ambitions.
Arteta also addressed the strategic considerations behind bolstering the defensive lineup. He pointed out that the team’s depth was a concern, with only six defenders available, making it imperative to strengthen the squad to navigate the demands of a rigorous season. Arteta explained, “We only had six defenders in the backline and at this level you have to be really lucky to sustain the season like this.” He emphasized the necessity of avoiding reliance on a limited roster, acknowledging the physical toll on players like William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães, who logged extensive minutes in the previous season.
