In a groundbreaking announcement that blends sports history with entertainment drama, Netflix has confirmed the release of a new docudrama titled An Underdog, chronicling the unlikely rise, fall, and remarkable resurgence of NFL Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk. The streaming giant’s announcement coincided with a stunning revelation confirmed by ESPN: Faulk, the legendary running back of the Los Angeles Rams, is set to return to the organization—not as a coach or commentator—but as a co-owner, beginning in 2026.

This monumental development was unveiled jointly by Rams principal owner Stan Kroenke and his family during a live-streamed press conference at SoFi Stadium, which included a surprise appearance by Faulk himself.

“This is more than just a business move,” said Kroenke. “It’s about honoring the legacy of a true Ram and bringing Marshall’s leadership, vision, and heart back to the franchise where he made history.”

From Turf Titan to Boardroom Boss

Marshall Faulk, who dazzled fans during his Hall of Fame career with his versatility and vision, played a pivotal role in the Rams’ historic “Greatest Show on Turf” era. He led the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2000 and earned NFL MVP honors in 2000 as well. Widely regarded as one of the most complete running backs in NFL history, Faulk’s transition from player to co-owner marks a rare and powerful move in professional sports.

“Being a part of the Rams organization changed my life,” Faulk said during the announcement. “To return in this capacity, to help shape its future and give back to the team that gave me everything—it’s a dream come true.”

Netflix’s An Underdog: A Story of Redemption and Ownership

Adding cinematic fuel to the fire, Netflix revealed that it will release An Underdog—a multi-episode docudrama produced in collaboration with ESPN Films—just weeks before Faulk officially joins the ownership group in 2026. The series will trace Faulk’s journey from the streets of New Orleans to NFL stardom, his post-retirement challenges, and his quiet, years-long pursuit to gain ownership in the NFL, a league where minority ownership remains a rarity.

“With An Underdog, we’re telling a story of grit, greatness, and groundbreaking ambition,” said Netflix’s VP of Sports Content, Maria Lang. “Marshall Faulk didn’t just want to make history on the field—he wanted to change it off the field, too.”

Bridging Generations

Faulk’s return comes at a time when the Rams are looking to build a new dynasty with young talent and deepen ties with their L.A. fan base. His involvement is expected to include roles in player mentorship, community engagement, and brand strategy.

“This isn’t ceremonial,” Kroenke emphasized. “Marshall will be an active part of our decision-making process. He’s earned his seat at the table.”

Fans and former teammates alike took to social media to celebrate the move. Former Rams quarterback Kurt Warner tweeted: “Couldn’t be happier for my brother Marshall. He led us on the field—now he leads in the boardroom. Let’s go!”

A Touchdown for Representation

Faulk’s entry into ownership also signals a shift in the NFL’s long-standing lack of diversity among its top ranks. As one of the few Black former players to take an ownership stake in a franchise, Faulk is seen as a trailblazer for future generations.

“There’s still a lot of work to do,” Faulk said. “But I hope my story shows young athletes that your impact can go far beyond the game.”

Coming in 2026:

An Underdog premieres globally on Netflix in Spring 2026. Marshall Faulk officially joins the Los Angeles Rams ownership group in July 2026, marking a new era in NFL history—on the field, and far beyond it.
