Netflix has just released “The UnderDog,” a powerful and long-awaited documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Indiana basketball icon Oscar Robertson.
Touching down on the platform just minutes ago, the documentary promises to deliver an intimate, never-before-seen look into the trials, triumphs, and towering legacy of the man affectionately known as “The Big O.” Produced by SpringHill Entertainment in collaboration with Netflix Originals, the film was slated for release on August 3, 2025, and fans have wasted no time diving in.
Narrated by Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, “The UnderDog” features exclusive interviews with Robertson himself, NBA legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, and rare archival footage from his high school days at Crispus Attucks High School, his time at the University of Cincinnati, and his groundbreaking NBA career.
Robertson, often credited with revolutionizing the guard position and breaking racial barriers in professional sports, is celebrated not just for his triple-double dominance, but also for his fierce advocacy for civil rights and athletes’ labor rights.
Netflix describes the film as “an unfiltered portrait of greatness forged in adversity, from segregation-era Indianapolis to global basketball immortality.”
With early buzz already swirling across social media, “The UnderDog” is poised to become one of the year’s standout sports documentaries.
