In a stunning and unexpected move, Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen has officially submitted his resignation, sending shockwaves through the NFL just ahead of the regular season kickoff. The announcement came moments ago during a hastily called press conference at the Colts’ training facility.
Steichen, who was hired as the Colts’ head coach in 2023, led the team through a period of rebuilding, development, and renewed competitiveness. While no immediate reason was given for his departure, team sources cite “personal considerations and mutual understanding” as key factors in the decision.
But perhaps even more jaw-dropping is the announcement that followed:
Colts Hall of Fame Coach Tony Dungy is returning to the organization in a new role as Senior Coaching Advisor. Dungy, who led the Colts to a Super Bowl XLI victory and became the first Black head coach to win an NFL title, is considered one of the most respected figures in football history.
Colts owner Jim Irsay spoke briefly to the media:
“Shane Steichen brought energy and vision to our team, and we thank him for his leadership. Today, we also welcome back a true legend. Tony Dungy embodies everything the Horseshoe stands for, and his return brings not just experience, but a deep love for this franchise.”
Dungy, now 69, made it clear he is not returning as head coach but will serve in a senior strategic and mentoring capacity, working closely with the coaching staff and front office. His focus will reportedly be on player development, organizational culture, and long-term planning.
An interim head coach is expected to be named within the next 48 hours.
