TOUCH DOWN: Edmonton oilers Legend Bill Guerin Gives Oilers two buses and over $2 Million…
In a surprise move that’s left both fans and players stunned, former Edmonton Oilers star and NHL legend Bill Guerin has made a generous gift to his former team: two state-of-the-art luxury buses and over $2 million in support for player development and wellness programs.
The announcement was made during a press conference at Rogers Place earlier today, where Guerin appeared alongside Oilers GM Ken Holland and team captain Connor McDavid. The 54-year-old Guerin, who played with the Oilers from 1998 to 2001, said the donation was a way of giving back to the organization that helped shape his Hall of Fame-worthy career.
“Edmonton gave me some of the best years of my life,” Guerin said. “This team, this city — they believed in me, and I’ll never forget that. I want the next generation of Oilers to have every opportunity to succeed, both on and off the ice.”
A Gift With Purpose
The two custom team buses, valued at approximately $1.2 million combined, will be used for regional travel, team events, and community outreach programs. Equipped with reclining leather seats, onboard recovery equipment, and high-speed Wi-Fi, the buses are designed to meet the modern athlete’s needs while boosting team morale.
In addition to the transportation upgrade, the $2 million financial contribution will be earmarked for player development, nutrition, mental health support, and off-season training enhancements.
“Bill’s gift goes far beyond the financial. It sends a message to every young player coming through our system: once an Oiler, always an Oiler,” said GM Ken Holland. “This is the kind of legacy that builds dynasties.”
A Nod to Oilers’ New Era
Coming off their thrilling 2024-25 season, where the Oilers made it to the Stanley Cup Final before falling to the Florida Panthers in a six-game series, the team is looking to build on its momentum. Guerin’s contribution comes at a critical time as the franchise continues to invest heavily in infrastructure and long-term player support.
Connor McDavid, who’s been a vocal advocate for improved wellness resources in the NHL, praised the donation.
“It’s incredible. It’s more than generous — it’s inspiring,” McDavid said. “Guys like Bill paved the way for us, and now he’s paving the way for those who come after.”
From Star Player to Philanthropist
After his retirement in 2010, Guerin transitioned to management roles, currently serving as GM for the Minnesota Wild. Despite his professional ties elsewhere, his loyalty to Edmonton has remained intact.
“There’s something about Edmonton — the fans, the cold, the fire in the locker room — that stays with you,” Guerin said with a grin. “This is me saying thank you, and maybe lighting a fire for one more Cup run.”
As the Oilers prepare for the 2025-26 season, they’ll be hitting the road in style — and with a renewed sense of unity, thanks to one of their own.
