In a powerful move that has electrified the local hockey community, the Florida Panthers have announced a groundbreaking $20 million initiative to support youth development, mental health, and access to hockey for underserved communities throughout South Florida.

The initiative, called the “Panthers Power Play Project,” centers around the creation of the Florida Panthers Youth Development & Wellness Center — a sprawling, modern facility that will offer free ice hockey programs, academic tutoring, mental health support, and career mentoring for kids and teens across Broward and Miami-Dade Counties.

“This is the best we could hope for,” said Panthers CEO Matthew Caldwell. “This isn’t just about building hockey players. It’s about building futures.”

The announcement was made at a special community event outside Amerant Bank Arena, with hundreds of fans, youth hockey players, and Panthers alumni in attendance. Team captain Aleksander Barkov, visibly emotional, shared his excitement:

“I’ve always believed that hockey has the power to change lives. Now we’re bringing that change to the community in a real and lasting way.”

Key features of the Panthers Power Play Project include:

  • A brand-new ice rink and training complex in Fort Lauderdale.

  • Free equipment and skating lessons for children ages 6–16.

  • A partnership with local schools to provide after-school academic support.

  • On-site mental health counselors and mentorship programs led by athletes and community leaders.

  • Scholarship opportunities for students pursuing college or sports careers.

The NHL has praised the Panthers’ bold leadership, with Commissioner Gary Bettman calling the initiative “a gold standard for what franchise-community partnerships can look like in the 21st century.”

Local parents and educators have also expressed their gratitude.

“This is more than hockey. It’s hope,” said Tanya Martinez, a teacher in Miami. “It gives our kids a safe place, a purpose, and role models they can look up to.”

Construction on the new facility is set to begin this fall, with a grand opening planned for early 2027.

As the Panthers continue their rise as a force on the ice, they’re proving that their greatest legacy might just come off the rink — in the lives they touch and the communities they lift.
