In a move that has sent waves of excitement through the basketball world and the streets of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Lakers have officially partnered with city officials to launch a $30 million Youth Sports & Education Complex in South LA — a transformative project that fans, families, and former players are calling “the best news we could hope for.”

The announcement came during a packed press conference at Crypto.com Arena, where Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, Mayor Karen Bass, and team legend Magic Johnson stood side-by-side to unveil plans for the massive development aimed at underserved youth.

“The Lakers have always stood for more than basketball,” Buss said. “This is about legacy — building something that lifts communities for generations to come.”

The Lakers Legacy Center, as it will be named, will feature:

  • Indoor and outdoor basketball courts

  • Classrooms and tutoring centers

  • Mental health and wellness resources

  • A technology innovation lab

  • Free youth sports leagues and summer camps

  • Mentorship programs led by current and former Lakers stars

Lakers superstar Anthony Davis shared his thoughts in a heartfelt video message:

“I grew up in a community like this. If I had something like this growing up, who knows how much farther I could’ve gone, even faster. This is game-changing.”

The project, set to break ground in early 2026, will be funded jointly by the Lakers organization, private donors, and the city of Los Angeles. The goal is to provide a safe space where kids can learn, train, dream — and most importantly, grow.

Fans across social media exploded with support after the announcement, many calling it “a championship move off the court.” Several Lakers legends, including Kobe Bryant’s family foundation, are also expected to be involved in future programming.

“This isn’t just about winning games,” said Mayor Bass. “This is about winning futures.”

With the Lakers already a legendary franchise in basketball, this new chapter in community service shows they’re just as committed to lifting spirits as they are to raising banners.
