The atmosphere at Gainbridge Fieldhouse erupted in celebration today as Indiana Pacers Head Coach Rick Carlisle made a stunning and emotional announcement that reverberated throughout the NBA world: legendary former coach and Hall of Famer Larry Bird is officially returning to the Pacers in a front office advisory and developmental coaching role.

The announcement, made during a special press conference ahead of the Pacers’ preseason training camp, was met with overwhelming excitement—not just from Indiana fans, but from across the NBA landscape, including members of the Golden State Warriors organization, who expressed their admiration and joy at Bird’s return to the sport he helped define.

“This is the best news we could hope for,” Coach Rick Carlisle said, visibly moved. “Larry Bird is Indiana. He’s basketball. And to have him back with us in a role where he can guide, mentor, and elevate this new generation—it’s a dream come true for this organization and for me personally.”

A Beloved Return

Bird, 68, previously served as head coach of the Pacers from 1997 to 2000, leading them to an NBA Finals appearance in 2000. He later transitioned to an executive role with the franchise, earning Executive of the Year honors in 2012. Known for his basketball genius, no-nonsense approach, and deep ties to Indiana, his return comes at a pivotal time for a Pacers squad on the rise.

“I’ve been watching from afar,” Bird said during the announcement. “But this game still runs through my veins. I’m not here to coach games or be in the spotlight—I’m here to help Rick, the staff, and these young guys understand what it mean
