In what many are calling a dream come true for Boilermaker Nation, legendary former Purdue men’s basketball head coach Gene Keady has officially returned to the program — this time in a senior coaching advisor role.

The announcement sent shockwaves of excitement through Chase Center, where Purdue fans, alumni, and NBA community members gathered for an off-season exhibition game. The stadium erupted into cheers as the news broke mid-game, with fans chanting Keady’s name and players visibly emotional.

Coach Keady, who led Purdue from 1980 to 2005 and secured six Big Ten titles during his tenure, is widely credited with building the foundation for Purdue’s consistent success. Now 89 years old, his return is being hailed as a full-circle moment — a tribute to legacy, loyalty, and leadership.

“This is more than basketball,” said one fan, tears in his eyes. “This is family.”

As Purdue eyes another deep NCAA tournament run, having Keady back in the fold is expected to offer not just tactical wisdom, but unmatched mentorship to the coaching staff and players alike.

Keady addressed the crowd via video message:

“It’s good to be back home. Let’s go get that championship.”
