In a move that has stunned and inspired hockey fans and humanitarians alike, Edmonton Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl announced today that he is donating his entire $14 million in bonus and sponsorship earnings to combat homelessness in the city he’s called home since 2014.

The donation — one of the largest personal contributions to a homelessness initiative by a professional athlete in Canadian history — will directly fund the construction of 150 housing units and 300 emergency shelter beds as part of a major expansion of the Metro Oilers Homeless Project, a community-driven nonprofit based in Edmonton.

“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up, and I knew if I ever had the means, I’d give back in a meaningful way,” said Draisaitl at an emotional press conference held outside the future site of the shelter. “No one deserves to sleep on a sidewalk.”

From Hockey Star to Hometown Hero

Draisaitl, 29, has long been known for his on-ice brilliance — a former Hart Trophy winner, a perennial NHL All-Star, and a vital part of the Oilers’ deep playoff runs. But this act of generosity cements his legacy well beyond the rink.

“I never thought I’d see the day when one of our heroes would give up millions not for fame or tax breaks, but simply to give people a roof over their heads,” said Sandra Holmes, Director of Metro Oilers Homeless. “Leon’s donation isn’t just money — it’s hope.”

The $14 million gift will help the organization fast-track the development of a new, integrated shelter and housing facility expected to open in late 2026. The project will include:

  • 150 transitional and permanent supportive housing units
  • 300 emergency beds
  • Mental health and addiction support services
  • Job training and reintegration programs

“It Could Happen to Any of Us”

At the press conference, Draisaitl spoke candidly about his early life in Cologne, Germany, where he witnessed economic hardship up close.

“I saw people lose everything due to things outside their control — job losses, medical emergencies, mental health struggles. It taught me that homelessness isn’t about laziness or bad choices. It could happen to any of us,” he said.

This isn’t the first time Draisaitl has supported social causes. In recent years, he’s donated to youth hockey programs, mental health initiatives, and refugee support efforts. But this gesture — giving away his entire annual bonus and off-ice earnings — is being hailed as his most significant philanthropic move yet.

A Community Rallying

In response to Draisaitl’s donation, several Edmonton businesses and philanthropists have pledged matching contributions, potentially pushing the total impact of the initiative to over $25 million. The City of Edmonton has also expressed interest in expediting zoning approvals and permitting for the shelter.

Mayor Amarjeet Sohi praised Draisaitl for leading by example.

“In a world too often dominated by self-interest, Leon Draisaitl is showing us what true leadership looks like. Edmonton is proud to call him one of our own.”

Legacy Beyond the Ice

While Oilers fans may know Draisaitl for his deadly one-timer and powerful presence on the power play, this act ensures he’ll be remembered for something even greater — his compassion.

“This isn’t about hockey,” Draisaitl said, his voice breaking. “It’s about being human. If I can use what I’ve been given to help people stand back up, then that’s worth more than any trophy.”
