In a monumental and highly anticipated announcement, Clemson Tigers Head Coach Brad Brownell and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) have officially declared that former Clemson basketball legend Greg Buckner is returning to the program—this time, in a powerful new leadership role as the Chief Basketball Officer (CBO).

This groundbreaking move marks a new era for Clemson Men’s Basketball as the university welcomes back one of its most iconic alumni, whose impact on the program during the 1990s is still deeply felt by fans and players alike.

A Homecoming Years in the Making

Greg Buckner, a standout guard who played at Clemson from 1994 to 1998, is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and determined players in school history. Known for his defensive intensity, high basketball IQ, and team-first mentality, Buckner was a key catalyst in propelling the Tigers to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. He left Clemson as the program’s all-time leader in steals and was later drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1998 NBA Draft.

Now, after a successful career in the NBA and coaching roles with multiple franchises, Buckner returns to Clemson with a vision that transcends the court.

“This is more than just a return—it’s a mission,” Buckner said during the press conference. “I’ve always believed in the heart and potential of this program, and now I get to help shape its future in an even more meaningful way.”

What Is a Chief Basketball Officer?

The newly created Chief Basketball Officer (CBO) role is a strategic move by Clemson Athletics. The CBO will oversee all aspects of the basketball program’s development—including player recruitment, alumni relations, player mentorship, branding, and coordination between athletic and academic departments.

According to Head Coach Brad Brownell, the addition of Buckner as CBO is “a game-changer.”

“Greg understands Clemson better than anyone. He’s walked the same halls, worn the jersey, and represented our values at the highest level. His leadership, vision, and experience in both collegiate and professional basketball will elevate our program across the board,” said Brownell.

Support From the ACC

The ACC has also endorsed the hire, with ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips calling the move “visionary and long overdue.”

“Clemson is setting a new standard with the Chief Basketball Officer role, and having someone like Greg Buckner in that position is a model other schools may soon follow. It shows a commitment to both athletic excellence and long-term player development,” Phillips said.

What This Means for Clemson Basketball

Buckner’s return comes at a time when Clemson Basketball is experiencing a strong resurgence. With recent NCAA Tournament runs and a growing national profile, the Tigers are poised to compete at the highest level. Buckner’s presence adds credibility, leadership, and an unmistakable Clemson identity.

His goals? To cultivate a championship culture, build a stronger bridge between former and current players, and make Clemson a premier destination for top talent.

“We’re going to play the right way, win the right way, and build something that lasts,” Buckner emphasized.

A Legend Returns

For Clemson fans, Buckner’s return feels like a homecoming wrapped in destiny. As one of the university’s most beloved athletes, his presence ignites hope, pride, and the belief that the best is yet to come.

This is more than just good news—it’s the best news Clemson fans could hope for.
