In what fans are hailing as a historic and heartwarming moment, Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla officially announced that Jayson Christopher Tatum, the team’s star small forward, will assume the role of team captain for the upcoming NBA season.
At a press conference held at the Auerbach Center earlier today, Mazzulla praised Tatum’s leadership both on and off the court, calling him the “heartbeat of the franchise.”
“Jayson has grown into not just an incredible player, but a mentor, motivator, and role model,” said Mazzulla. “This isn’t just a title — it’s recognition of what he already means to this organization.”
Tatum, 27, has been with the Celtics since being drafted third overall in 2017. Over the years, he has evolved from a promising young talent into one of the league’s premier two-way players, earning multiple All-Star nods, All-NBA honors, and leading the Celtics to deep playoff runs.
The Celtics community — from long-time fans to current and former players — flooded social media with celebration.
“Jayson IS Boston,” tweeted Celtics legend Paul Pierce. “Couldn’t think of anyone more deserving to wear that ‘C’ with pride.”
Tatum himself appeared humbled and focused during the announcement.
“It’s an honor, but more importantly, it’s a responsibility,” he said. “This team, this city — they mean everything to me. I’m ready to lead us wherever we need to go.”
With a strong supporting cast and clear leadership in place, hopes are soaring for
