In what many are calling a landmark moment for the city of Boston, the Boston Celtics have officially announced a $25 million commitment to launch the “Celtics for Change” Initiative—a long-term investment aimed at uplifting underserved communities through education, mental health services, and youth sports development.

The announcement, made at a packed press event held at the TD Garden, was met with thunderous applause and heartfelt emotion. Fans, local leaders, and former Celtics legends stood united as the team’s ownership, led by Wyc Grousbeck, and several players pledged to go beyond the hardwood and build lasting change in the community.

“This is the best news we could hope for,” said Mayor Michelle Wu, who joined the team onstage. “The Celtics are showing us what leadership looks like—not just on the court, but in every neighborhood across this city.”

The Celtics for Change Initiative will include:

  • Construction of three new youth recreation centers in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan.

  • A scholarship fund for Boston Public School students pursuing higher education.

  • Free basketball camps and clinics hosted by current Celtics players.

  • Expansion of mental health outreach programs for at-risk youth.

  • A new “Legends Mentorship Program” pairing retired Celtics greats with young community leaders.

Celtics star Jayson Tatum, speaking at the event, said:

“Boston has given me so much. This is our way of giving something powerful back. We want every kid here to know they have a future—and we believe in them.”

The initiative has already drawn praise from across the NBA, with Commissioner Adam Silver calling it “a shining example of how teams can help lead the way toward social progress.”

As the Celtics gear up for another run at an NBA title, they’ve already won something far more meaningful: the hearts of a city that now sees its team as champions not just in basketball, but in humanity.
