This Is the Best I Can Do”: Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams Addresses JJ Peterka Trade Rumors…

Buffalo Sabres General Manager Kevyn Adams spoke candidly today in response to swirling rumors surrounding forward JJ Peterka and the team’s trade talks, offering a clear yet emotionally tempered message: “This is the best I can do.”

The comment came during Adams’ end-of-offseason press availability, where speculation about Peterka’s future reached a boiling point following recent reports linking the 23-year-old winger to multiple teams, including the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings. Despite the buzz, Adams downplayed the immediacy of any move but stopped short of issuing a full denial.

“Look, I understand the passion, the concern — JJ is a tremendous young talent, and any time a name like his comes up in talks, it creates noise,” Adams said. “But as a GM, I have to explore every avenue to make this team better. If I were to say ‘never’ about any player, I wouldn’t be doing my job.”

Peterka, who posted 27 goals and 32 assists last season, has emerged as a dynamic offensive presence on Buffalo’s second line. His breakout campaign has raised both his value and expectations as the Sabres continue to weigh win-now moves against their long-term development strategy. The team missed the playoffs for a 14th consecutive season, and pressure is mounting on Adams to deliver tangible results.

Adams confirmed that teams have inquired about Peterka, but insisted that no deal is imminent.

“Other GMs know we’re looking to improve. JJ’s name gets mentioned because he has value,” Adams said. “I’m not shopping him — but if someone calls with a serious offer that helps us now and in the future, I have to listen. That’s not about giving up on a player. It’s about doing right by the organization.”

He later added, “This is the best I can do with the information and options I have. It’s not about being passive or aggressive — it’s about being smart.”

Insiders say the Sabres are exploring deals for a top-four defenseman or a veteran goaltender to stabilize their back end, and that Peterka, along with prospects or picks, could be part of a larger package if the right opportunity arises.

While no trade has materialized, Adams’ comments leave the door open for movement in the coming weeks, particularly as the NHL Draft and free agency approach.

For now, Peterka remains a Sabre but in Buffalo, the offseason is far from over.
