In a terrifying turn of events, Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff, team captain Rasmus Dahlin, and nine other players were discovered on a team bus that caught fire earlier this morning while en route to a pre-game event.
Emergency services responded to the scene on Interstate 90 near the Buffalo city limits after several 911 calls reported a large vehicle engulfed in flames. The bus was transporting a portion of the Sabres’ roster and staff to a promotional event ahead of their next home game.
First responders acted swiftly, managing to evacuate all individuals from the burning vehicle. Initial reports confirm that no fatalities occurred, but several players, including Dahlin, were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns. One unidentified player has been hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene: “The bus just started smoking and then suddenly burst into flames,” said local driver Amanda Keane. “People were banging on the windows trying to get out—it was terrifying.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though authorities have not ruled out mechanical failure. The team’s official transportation contractor has been placed under review, and the National Hockey League (NHL) has issued a statement offering support to the Sabres and confirming that the incident is being investigated fully.
Coach Lindy Ruff, who rejoined the Sabres organization in 2024, reportedly assisted in evacuating players from the bus before emergency crews arrived. “He helped pull guys out through the emergency exit,” said a team spokesperson. “He may have saved lives.”
The Sabres have postponed tonight’s media appearance, and the status of their upcoming game remains uncertain as players recover both physically and emotionally.
Fans across the league have begun expressing support on social media with the hashtag #SabresStrong trending nationwide.
