The Indiana Pacers organization, its players, and fans across the basketball world are in a state of sorrowful reflection following a deeply emotional announcement made by Head Coach Rick Carlisle.

In a quiet and tearful press conference held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse earlier this week, Carlisle revealed that he and his wife, Donna, are facing an unexpected and devastating personal challenge. Without delving into specifics, the 65-year-old coach shared that his wife has recently been diagnosed with a serious health condition that will require his full attention and unwavering support in the coming months.

“My wife has always been the quiet strength behind me,” Carlisle said, visibly emotional. “Now, it’s my turn to be that strength for her.”

The news struck a chord throughout the Pacers locker room, many of whom have viewed Carlisle not just as a coach, but as a mentor and father figure. Several players were seen with tears in their eyes as Carlisle embraced his team one by one following the announcement.

Veteran guard Tyrese Haliburton was among the first to speak out.

“Coach Carlisle changed my life,” Haliburton said. “He believed in all of us—not just as players but as men. Right now, all we can do is lift him and Donna up in prayer.”

Social media quickly filled with heartfelt messages of support from current and former players, fans, and figures across the NBA community. Hashtags like #PrayersForCarlisle and #PacersFamily trended within hours as the basketball world came together in solidarity.

Although the Pacers have not officially confirmed whether Carlisle will be stepping away from his coaching duties temporarily, team sources have indicated that assistant coach Lloyd Pierce may assume interim responsibilities if necessary. Regardless, the organization has made it clear that Carlisle has its full support, no matter what decision he makes.

Team President Kevin Pritchard issued a statement late Tuesday:

“Rick Carlisle is not just our coach—he’s our family. We stand by him and Donna with love, respect, and whatever time they need.”

Carlisle, who has spent over 20 seasons as a head coach in the NBA and led the Dallas Mavericks to a championship in 2011, returned to Indiana with the mission of building a culture of resilience, purpose, and unity. In many ways, this emotional chapter now shows just how deeply that culture runs.

As fans gather outside the arena with candles, signs, and prayer circles, one thing is clear: Indiana is not just a basketball team—it’s a family. And right now, that family is standing together for one of its own.
