JUST IN: Netflix to Release Underdog _ a highly anticipated Documentary about Buffalo Sabres all-time leading goal-scorer Gilbert Perreault Slated for release on…
Netflix has officially announced the release date for its latest original sports documentary, Underdog, which tells the story of Gilbert Perreault — the legendary center and all-time leading goal-scorer for the Buffalo Sabres. The film is slated to premiere globally on September 20, 2025, and is already generating significant buzz among hockey fans and sports historians alike.
Produced in collaboration with NHL Studios and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Rachel Steinberg (Last Shift, Echoes of Greatness), Underdog promises an intimate and stirring portrait of Perreault’s journey from a small-town kid in Quebec to becoming the face of a franchise and one of the most graceful players to ever step onto NHL ice.
A Sabres Legend
Perreault, the first-ever draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 1970, played his entire 17-season NHL career with the team. Known for his smooth skating, playmaking vision, and iconic wrist shot, he amassed 512 goals and 814 assists over 1,191 games. He was the centerpiece of the famed “French Connection” line, alongside Rick Martin and René Robert — a trio that defined an era in Buffalo hockey.
Despite never capturing a Stanley Cup, Perreault’s impact on the game and the city of Buffalo is immeasurable. Underdog explores his on-ice brilliance, the cultural bond he forged with the Sabres’ fanbase, and the quieter struggles he faced off the ice.
More Than a Hockey Story
In a press statement, director Steinberg said, “Gilbert’s story is about more than goals and games. It’s about loyalty, identity, and the price of greatness. ‘Underdog’ is a tribute not just to the player, but to the city that believed in him — and what it means to carry that weight.”
The documentary features never-before-seen archival footage, rare interviews with Perreault himself, and commentary from teammates, rivals, family members, and hockey legends including Wayne Gretzky, Scotty Bowman, and Mario Lemieux.
Netflix’s Expanding Sports Portfolio
Underdog continues Netflix’s growing investment in premium sports content, following the success of series like Quarterback, Formula 1: Drive to Survive, and Untold. The documentary aims to tap into the deep emotional ties between fans and their sports heroes, especially in smaller markets often overlooked in mainstream media.
Buffalo Sabres fans have long clamored for a proper tribute to their first and most beloved superstar — and with Underdog, it appears they’re finally getting the story told on a grand stage.
