In a landmark gesture that stunned the basketball world, Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant has posthumously donated $15.5 million toward the team’s ambitious new basketball stadium project — an initiative spearheaded by newly-appointed head coach JJ Redick.

The donation, made through the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation, is the largest private contribution to the Lakers organization in over a decade. It marks a powerful symbolic move, highlighting Bryant’s enduring connection to the franchise and his commitment to nurturing the next generation of Lakers greatness.

“The Los Angeles Lakers pride lives within me wherever I go,” said Bryant in a message prepared prior to his passing, which was recently made public by his family and the Foundation. “This team gave me everything, and I’m committed — in legacy and spirit — to supporting its future.”

A Vision for the Future

The stadium project, first proposed earlier this year, aims to provide a state-of-the-art training and development facility for Lakers players, coaches, and youth programs across Southern California. Coach JJ Redick, in his first season as head coach, has emphasized the need for a modern, purpose-built facility that fosters both elite performance and community engagement.

“Kobe’s gift is more than financial — it’s spiritual,” said Redick during a press conference held at Crypto.com Arena. “He believed in building not just champions, but character. This new facility will be a place where future stars are made — through hard work, discipline, and love for the game, just like Kobe preached.”

Community Impact

The stadium is expected to feature:

A cutting-edge training center for the Lakers

A youth basketball academy for underserved communities

A museum and exhibition space celebrating Lakers history and Kobe’s legacy

Renewable energy systems and community-accessible recreational facilities

The Lakers organization has confirmed that the main court within the facility will be named the “Kobe Bryant Memorial Court.”

A Legacy Etched in Gold and Purple

Kobe Bryant, who spent his entire 20-year career with the Lakers, won five NBA championships and remains a cultural icon in Los Angeles and around the world. His influence continues to guide the franchise, and this historic donation is the latest chapter in an already unmatched legacy.

As construction is set to begin early next year, Lakers fans now have another reason to celebrate: the Mamba spirit still lives — and it’s investing in the future.
