The Edmonton Oilers and their fans received a massive boost today as superstar forward Leon Draisaitl has officially signed a contract extension through 2030 worth a staggering $200 million, solidifying his place as the franchise cornerstone for years to come.
The deal, which averages $33.3 million per year, sets a new record in NHL history as the highest total contract value ever awarded to a player, reflecting Draisaitl’s elite status in the league and his unparalleled value to the Oilers organization.
Draisaitl, 29, has been an instrumental part of Edmonton’s recent success, forming one of the NHL’s most feared duos alongside Connor McDavid. Since being drafted third overall in 2014, the German-born forward has amassed over 900 career points and earned numerous accolades, including the Hart Memorial Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award.
“This is where I want to be,” Draisaitl said in a statement. “Edmonton is home. I believe in this team, I believe in this city, and I believe we have what it takes to bring the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton.”
Oilers general manager Ken Holland called the signing a “franchise-defining moment.”
“Leon is one of the best players in the world,” Holland said. “Securing him through 2030 gives us a tremendous opportunity to build a championship-caliber team around him.”
The extension comes amid growing optimism in Edmonton, with the team making deep playoff runs in recent seasons. With Draisaitl and McDavid both under long-term contracts, the Oilers are firmly positioned to remain contenders well into the next decade.
Fans celebrated across the city as news of the deal broke, with many calling it the “best signing in Oilers history” since Wayne Gretzky’s heyday. Social media erupted with joy, with #Draisaitl2030 trending nationwide.
With his future secured, Draisaitl’s focus now shifts to bringing the ultimate prize back to Alberta: the Stanley Cup.
