Chase Center was buzzing with more than just basketball excitement today. Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green announced a monumental $8.6 million personal investment to transform a historic building in Oakland, California into a comprehensive shelter for homeless youth.
The facility, to be named “Green Haven”, will not only offer safe housing but also educational programs, job training, mental health counseling, and athletic opportunities. It’s an ambitious project that aims to give young people the tools and stability they need to build meaningful, independent lives.
The Vision
The property, a 12,000-square-foot former community center built in 1920, will undergo a full renovation over the next 14 months. Once complete, it will house up to 50 residents between the ages of 14 and 21, providing both immediate safety and long-term development programs.
Key planned features include:
-
Private and shared bedrooms designed to create a sense of dignity and comfort.
-
A study hall and tech lab with free Wi-Fi, computers, and tutoring sessions.
-
A kitchen and communal dining hall where residents can share meals and learn cooking skills.
-
A small indoor basketball court and fitness center to promote physical health and teamwork.
-
On-site health and counseling offices offering access to doctors, therapists, and social workers.
“This isn’t just a shelter,” Green said at the press conference. “This is a place where kids can feel safe, focus on their dreams, and know that someone truly believes in them.”
Why Oakland?
Draymond Green has always been vocal about his love for the Bay Area. While originally from Saginaw, Michigan, he considers Oakland a second home — a place that embraced him when he joined the Warriors in 2012.
“Oakland has given me so much,” Green shared. “I’ve seen firsthand the challenges some young people face here. Too many kids are just trying to survive each day without the stability or support they need. This is my way of saying — I see you, I believe in you, and I’m here to help.”
Community Reaction
The announcement drew loud cheers from fans, teammates, and community leaders gathered at Chase Center.
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr praised Green’s commitment:
“Draymond has always been a fierce competitor on the court, but this shows the size of his heart. This is leadership at the highest level.”
Teammate Stephen Curry posted on social media:
“Proud of my brother. This is bigger than basketball.”
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao also expressed gratitude:
“Green Haven will change lives. It will not only provide shelter but also hope and opportunity for our city’s youth.”
Partnerships and Programs
Green Haven will collaborate with local nonprofits, schools, and workforce development agencies to ensure residents have clear pathways to education and employment. Partnerships with Bay Area sports organizations will bring mentorship programs and athletic training into the shelter’s daily schedule.
In addition, mental health support will be a central focus, with 24/7 access to licensed counselors and peer support groups.
Impact Beyond the Game
Draymond Green’s initiative is part of a growing movement among professional athletes who use their platform and earnings to create tangible community impact. For Green, this isn’t a one-time donation — he’s committed to funding ongoing operational costs for at least the first five years.
“This is not about making a headline,” Green emphasized. “This is about changing a headline — from ‘Youth Homelessness Crisis’ to ‘Youth Success Stories.’”
Looking Ahead
Renovations on the Green Haven building are set to begin in early spring, with an anticipated opening in the following summer. Community members will be invited to participate in the planning process, from selecting artwork for the walls to creating the shelter’s garden space.
Green closed his announcement with a message that brought the audience to its feet:
“A safe bed, a hot meal, a chance to learn, a place to dream — these shouldn’t be luxuries. They should be rights. And together, Oakland, we can make that happen.”
As the crowd erupted in applause, it was clear that Draymond Green’s latest assist won’t show up in the box score — but it might just be his most important one yet.
