In a historic announcement today, the Edmonton Oilers have officially unveiled plans to immortalize their most legendary player, Wayne Gretzky, with a new bronze statue to be erected outside Rogers Place. Titled “The Eternal Tribute,” the monument will serve as a permanent homage to “The Great One” — a man whose name is synonymous with greatness, both in Edmonton and across the hockey world.

Team owner Daryl Katz, flanked by Oilers alumni and current players, addressed a crowd of fans, media, and city officials at the unveiling ceremony. “This is more than just a statue,” Katz said. “It is a symbol of what Gretzky means to the Oilers. His influence shaped a generation of players and inspired countless others to pick up a stick and dream big.”

A Legacy Cast in Bronze

The statue, which is set to be unveiled to the public in the summer of 2026, will depict Gretzky in his iconic No. 99 jersey, raising the Stanley Cup in triumph — a nod to the Oilers’ dynasty years during the 1980s when Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cups in five years.

Internationally renowned sculptor Kristine Loring has been commissioned for the project. “We wanted this piece to capture not just a moment, but a movement — the magic, the momentum, and the man behind it all,” Loring explained.

Standing over 12 feet tall and weighing more than 2,000 pounds, the statue will be placed at Ice District Plaza, near Rogers Place, ensuring it becomes a focal point for fans before every game and a pilgrimage site for hockey lovers visiting Edmonton.

Gretzky’s Enduring Impact

Wayne Gretzky’s influence on the Oilers — and the sport itself — is immeasurable. From his record-shattering stats to his leadership both on and off the ice, Gretzky transformed the NHL and helped put Edmonton on the global hockey map.

During his time with the Oilers, Gretzky scored 583 goals and tallied 1,669 points in just 696 games. He won the Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) eight consecutive times while in Edmonton and redefined offensive hockey for generations to come.

Former teammate Mark Messier, who attended the announcement, called the statue a “fitting tribute to the best to ever play the game.” He added, “Wayne brought a level of excellence that lifted all of us. He was a teammate, a leader, and a friend — and now his legacy will stand forever in the heart of this city.”

Community Reaction

Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi praised the initiative as a celebration not only of sports excellence but also of community pride. “Gretzky is woven into the cultural fabric of Edmonton. This statue will stand as a reminder of the joy, pride, and hope he brought to this city,” the mayor stated.

Fans echoed the sentiment, many expressing excitement about the new monument. “We already have a smaller statue near the arena, but this — this feels like the tribute he truly deserves,” said longtime Oilers fan Carla Jennings. “He gave us memories that will last forever.”

The Great One Responds

In a video message aired during the ceremony, Wayne Gretzky humbly thanked the organization and the city. “I’m incredibly honored and deeply moved by this tribute. Edmonton has always been home for me — not just because I played here, but because of the people. I hope this statue inspires future generations to chase their dreams with passion, humility, and hard work.”

Looking Ahead

Construction on the statue’s base will begin this fall, with the full unveiling planned for July 2026 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Oilers’ first Stanley Cup victory. A week-long celebration is already in the works, including alumni games, fan festivals, and a special “Gretzky Gala” charity fundraiser.

As Edmonton prepares to cast its most cherished icon in bronze, one thing is clear: Wayne Gretzky’s legacy isn’t just a part of Oilers history — it is Oilers history. And now, it will stand eternal.
