In a shocking development, ESPN has confirmed that New York Rangers right wing Alexis Lafrenière has been banned indefinitely from all game activities after testing positive for a banned substance, league sources revealed Friday afternoon.

The NHL and the NHLPA have yet to release an official joint statement, but early reports suggest the banned substance in question is performance-enhancing, though the specific compound has not been disclosed.

According to insiders close to the team, Lafrenière was subjected to a random drug screening during pre-season training activities last week. The positive test result triggered an immediate investigation and subsequent disciplinary action in line with the league’s Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program.

The 23-year-old winger, who was drafted first overall in 2020 and has emerged as a key offensive contributor for the Rangers, was expected to play a pivotal role in the team’s 2025–26 season push.

The Rangers have issued a brief statement:

“We are aware of the situation involving Alexis Lafrenière. The organization will cooperate fully with the league’s review process. At this time, we will not be commenting further.”

Lafrenière’s legal representatives have not yet responded to media requests.

Fans and analysts are expressing disbelief on social media, as this news comes just weeks ahead of the regular season opener. With the indefinite nature of the suspension, Lafrenière’s future with the Rangers—and possibly the NHL—is now in serious question
