The New Orleans Saints have released veteran running back Jamaal Williams after two seasons, aiming to free up salary cap space.
Williams, who signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Saints in March 2023, struggled to replicate his previous success with the Detroit Lions. During his tenure in New Orleans, he amassed 470 rushing yards and two touchdowns over 27 games, including five starts.
Williams’ departure allows the Saints to save $1.59 million against the salary cap, despite incurring a $2.34 million dead cap charge.
This move aligns with the team’s strategy to manage their financial situation and focus on younger talent in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
The Saints’ current running back roster includes Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller, Jordan Mims, and the recently re-signed Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Williams, who will soon turn 30, is now an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.
