announcement that has thrilled the Collingwood faithful, the Collingwood Football Club has officially welcomed back one of its most iconic figures, Nathan Buckley, appointing him as the club’s new Executive Chairman.
The move marks a significant moment in the club’s history, with Buckley returning to the black and white in a powerful off-field leadership role. A revered figure at Collingwood, Buckley’s legacy as a Brownlow Medalist (2003), long-time captain, and former senior coach now expands into the boardroom as he prepares to help guide the Magpies into their next chapter.
“This club has always been home,” Buckley said at a packed press conference held at the AIA Centre. “Collingwood shaped who I am. To be given the chance to return in a position where I can influence the club’s future so broadly is incredibly meaningful.”
As Executive Chairman, Buckley will oversee Collingwood’s broader strategic direction, bringing football and administration closer together. The role will see him work in tandem with Chief Executive Craig Kelly and senior coach Craig McRae, unifying the club’s vision from grassroots to the elite level.
Club President Jodie Sizer praised Buckley’s appointment as “a defining moment” for Collingwood:
“Nathan’s leadership, character and deep understanding of this football club make him uniquely qualified to take on this role. We are thrilled to welcome him back in a capacity that will shape our future on and off the field.”
Buckley is one of the most decorated figures in AFL history. Over his playing career from 1994 to 2007, he played 280 games for Collingwood, captained the club from 1999 to 2007, won six Copeland Trophies, and earned seven All-Australian selections. Following his retirement, Buckley transitioned seamlessly into coaching, leading the club as senior coach from 2012 to 2021 and taking the Magpies to the 2018 AFL Grand Final.
Since stepping away from coaching, Buckley has remained a respected analyst in the AFL media landscape, known for his articulate commentary and sharp football mind. His return to Collingwood comes at a time of strength and momentum for the club, both on and off the field.
“Collingwood is in a strong position, but we’re never satisfied,” Buckley said. “There’s always more to do — in performance, culture, and community. I’m here to help ensure that we continue to evolve while staying true to what makes this club special.”
The appointment of Buckley is part of a broader push by the club to integrate football expertise into its strategic leadership, reinforcing its ambition to be not just a contender on the field, but a model organisation off it.
Buckley will begin his role immediately, with his focus set on aligning the club’s football and commercial arms, strengthening stakeholder relationships, and preparing Collingwood for long-term success.
For the Magpie Army, it’s a powerful reunion — one of the club’s greatest sons returning to shape its future.
And for Nathan Buckley, it’s another chapter in a storied journey that continues to evolve — always
in black and white.
