In a monumental move that bridges the past and future of the franchise, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced today that Hall of Famer and franchise icon Randy Johnson will return to the organization in 2025 — this time, as co-owner.
The announcement was made jointly by managing general partner Ken Kendrick and the Johnson family, marking one of the most significant ownership developments in team history. The deal has reportedly been in discussion for months and was finalized earlier this week.
“Randy Johnson is more than a baseball legend — he’s a cornerstone of this franchise’s identity,” Kendrick said during a press conference at Chase Field. “His return as co-owner symbolizes a powerful new chapter for the Diamondbacks, one grounded in legacy, excellence, and a shared vision for the future.”
Known as “The Big Unit”, Johnson pitched for Arizona from 1999 to 2004 and again in 2007–2008, capturing four consecutive Cy Young Awards, a World Series title in 2001, and throwing one of only two perfect games in team history. His presence helped define the D-backs’ golden era.
Randy Johnson expressed his excitement about the new role:
“This organization gave me some of the greatest moments of my career,” Johnson said. “Now I’m honored to help guide it forward as a co-owner. Arizona has always felt like home, and I can’t wait to build something special with our fans and the community.”
Though specific details of his stake were not immediately disclosed, sources close to the team indicate that Johnson will be active in player development, community outreach, and strategic planning.
