In a surprising and heartfelt statement today, AFL superstar and Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli, often admired across club lines, has openly praised Collingwood Football Club for their relentless drive and spirit leading into the 2025 AFL Finals.

Speaking during a press conference ahead of the Bulldogs’ own finals preparation, Bontempelli was asked about the state of competition this season and didn’t shy away from commending the Magpies — a traditional rival — for their transformation and unity.

“You can’t help but respect what Collingwood’s been able to do this year,” Bontempelli said. “They’ve built a strong culture, and you can see it in the way they play. Their leadership group, young players, and the way they fight through adversity — it’s impressive.”

While not a Collingwood player himself, Bontempelli’s comments have sparked headlines due to his status as one of the game’s most respected figures. His public acknowledgment adds weight to Collingwood’s credentials heading into what promises to be a fiercely contested finals series.

The Magpies, under coach Craig McRae, have enjoyed a season marked by resilience and a late surge in form. After a shaky mid-season run, they now sit in the top four and are considered serious contenders for the premiership.

Bontempelli also touched on the broader state of the league, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect among clubs, even those with a fierce history.

“There’s obviously a rivalry there,” he added with a smile. “But at the end of the day, we’re all in this competition to push each other to be better. What they’re doing is lifting the standard — and that’s good for everyone.”

Social media was quick to light up after Bontempelli’s comments, with fans from both clubs reacting. Some Collingwood supporters went as far as jokingly suggesting the Bulldogs skipper had “black and white blood,” while Bulldogs fans praised his class and leadership.

The Bulldogs are set to face Carlton this weekend, while Collingwood gears up for their qualifying final against Brisbane at the MCG.

With the finals around the corner and tensions rising, Bontempelli’s words may serve as a rare reminder of the sportsmanship that underpins even the fiercest of AFL rivalries.
