In a monumental announcement shaking the hockey world, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have officially confirmed that Mario Lemieux, the franchise icon and Hall of Famer, will return to the organization in 2025 as a Co-Owner and Vice Chairman.
The Lemieux family, in collaboration with FSG, revealed the news this morning in a joint press release, stating that the decision marks a “full-circle moment” for one of the most storied figures in NHL history.
“Mario has always been the heart and soul of the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said FSG principal owner John Henry. “His leadership, legacy, and deep connection to this city are unmatched. We are honored to welcome him back in a significant leadership role.”
Lemieux, who previously rescued the Penguins from financial collapse in the late 1990s and later led them to multiple Stanley Cup victories both on and off the ice, expressed deep pride and emotion over his return:
“This city, this team — they’ve always been a part of me,” Lemieux said. “I’m thrilled to rejoin the organization in a new chapter, and I look forward to working alongside FSG to build a championship-caliber team for the future.”
The move comes amid a major strategic restructuring aimed at revitalizing the Penguins’ front office and long-term vision. Lemieux’s new role will involve senior-level decision-making on hockey operations, fan engagement, and franchise growth.
Fans across Pittsburgh and the NHL are already hailing the announcement as a historic homecoming.
