In a move that has sent shockwaves through the basketball world, Boston Celtics owner Bill Chisholm, alongside General Manager Marcus Thornton, held an emergency press conference this morning at TD Garden to announce a major change in the team’s coaching leadership.

With media and fans alike still reeling from the Celtics’ disappointing playoff exit last season, Chisholm confirmed that Head Coach Joe Mazzulla has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately. The unexpected decision marks the end of a tumultuous tenure that, while highlighted by strong regular-season performances, failed to translate into consistent postseason success.

“This was not a decision we made lightly,” said Chisholm, addressing a packed press room. “Joe is a tremendous coach and person, but we believe a new direction is necessary to bring Banner 18 to Boston.”

GM Marcus Thornton added, “We are incredibly grateful for Joe’s contributions, but the organization has reached a critical juncture. Our players, our fans, and our city deserve a championship-caliber approach every single day.”

In an even more surprising twist, Chisholm announced the interim head coach will be former Celtics legend and Hall of Famer Paul Pierce, who has been working as a player development consultant with the organization for the past two seasons.

Pierce, taking the podium in a green tie and Celtics lapel pin, expressed both humility and confidence.

“This city raised me. This franchise made me,” said Pierce. “I’m not just here to coach—I’m here to win. The championship culture starts now.”

The team is expected to conduct a full coaching search in the offseason, but insiders suggest Pierce could secure the permanent role if he can rally the roster and show significant progress during the 2025–26 season.

NBA analysts and fans have already begun speculating on the implications of the change, with some calling it a bold, if risky, move for a franchise hungry for its first title since 2008.
