In a stunning reversal, ESPN has confirmed that the highly anticipated $89.7 million, three-year deal involving the Pardes de San Diego’s right fielder has collapsed—just hours after being reported as finalized. The star outfielder, who had just completed a three-month suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s conduct policy, is now en route to the Pittsburgh Pirates for final deal negotiations and contract signing.

Sources close to the situation say the shift was sparked by a sudden dispute over performance clauses and contract protections tied to the player’s recent suspension. Despite initial optimism, talks between the Pardes and the player’s management reportedly broke down late last night, opening the door for Pittsburgh to swoop in with a revised offer.

The player, whose name is being withheld pending official announcement, was seen boarding a private flight early this morning bound for Pittsburgh. The Pirates are expected to finalize terms by the end of the day.

This unexpected move throws a wrench into the Pardes’ plans for the 2026 season, as the team had counted on the All-Star outfielder to anchor their lineup following his return. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh, currently rebuilding its roster, may have landed one of the most surprising acquisitions of the offseason
