Duke Basketball is thrilled to welcome back a familiar face. Tyler Thornton, a four-year letter winner and former team captain with the Blue Devils, is returning to Durham after spending the past six seasons (2019–2025) as an assistant coach and director of player development at Howard University.
Thornton, who earned a reputation at Duke for his tenacious defense, leadership, and clutch play, brings with him a wealth of coaching experience and a deep understanding of the Duke culture. His return marks a significant addition to the program as it continues to build on its tradition of excellence.

A native of Washington, D.C., Thornton played for the Blue Devils from 2010 to 2014, appearing in 141 games and serving as team captain his senior year. Known for his gritty defense and timely playmaking, he became a fan favorite and a respected leader in the locker room.
After his playing career, Thornton transitioned into coaching, joining the staff at Howard University in 2019. During his tenure, he helped guide the Bison to new heights, contributing to both player development and recruiting efforts.
Now back at his alma mater, Thornton will bring his coaching acumen, personal growth, and unwavering loyalty to a new chapter of Duke Basketball.
