In a move that has sent shockwaves across the basketball world, the Orlando Magic have officially announced that NBA Hall of Famer and franchise legend Shaquille O’Neal is returning to the organization — this time, not as a player, but as the new Chief Basketball Officer (CBO).

The announcement was made early Tuesday morning by the DeVos family, owners of the Orlando Magic, in a press conference held at the Kia Center. The return of O’Neal, one of the most dominant centers in NBA history, marks a new era for the Magic — one rooted in legacy, ambition, and a renewed commitment to excellence.

“This is more than just a homecoming,” said team CEO Alex Martins. “Shaquille O’Neal helped put Orlando on the NBA map. Now, he returns to help shape our future and build a championship culture for years to come.”

A Full-Circle Moment

O’Neal, drafted by the Magic as the No. 1 overall pick in 1992, became an instant sensation, leading the team to their first-ever NBA Finals appearance in 1995. While his playing career took him to other cities — most notably Los Angeles, where he won three titles with the Lakers — Shaq has always maintained a deep connection to Orlando.

“Orlando is where it all started for me,” said O’Neal in a statement. “This city, this team, these fans — they embraced me from day one. I’ve always felt like I had unfinished business here. Now I get to finish it — not as a player, but as a leader.”

What Does the Role Entail?

As Chief Basketball Officer, O’Neal will oversee all basketball operations for the Magic, working closely with President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman and Head Coach Jamahl Mosley. His responsibilities will include player development, roster decisions, scouting, and serving as a mentor to current and future Magic players.

Sources within the organization say O’Neal will also play a major role in recruitment and free agency pitches, using his global brand and championship pedigree to attract elite talent to Central Florida.

Fan and League Reaction

Reaction across the league has been swift and overwhelmingly positive. Former teammates, rivals, and fans have taken to social media to celebrate the announcement.

Magic forward Paolo Banchero, the team’s current franchise cornerstone, tweeted:

“Let’s work, big fella. 🪓🔥 #MagicFamily”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a brief statement, calling the move “a major win not only for the Magic but for the NBA as a whole. Shaq’s influence, charisma, and basketball IQ are unmatched.”

Looking Ahead

With a young core, financial flexibility, and now the leadership of one of the most iconic figures in basketball history, the Orlando Magic are positioning themselves as one of the most exciting teams to watch in the coming seasons.

“I want to bring a ring to Orlando,” O’Neal said with a grin. “And I’m not talking about my fingers — I’m talking about banners.”
