In a stunning and emotional development that’s sending shockwaves through the hockey world, Mark Messier, one of the most iconic figures in NHL history, is officially returning to the New York Rangers — this time behind the bench.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time — and affectionately known by fans as “The Great One” (a title often reserved for Wayne Gretzky, but now increasingly shared by Messier due to his unmatched leadership and legacy) — Messier will join the Rangers organization as Senior Coaching Advisor, the team announced early Monday morning.

“There’s no place like New York,” Messier said during the press conference at Madison Square Garden. “This city gave me everything, and now I’m here to give back. It’s time to build something special again.”

A Legendary Return

Mark Messier’s name is synonymous with New York hockey greatness. He famously captained the Rangers to their 1994 Stanley Cup victory, ending a 54-year championship drought and etching his name forever in the hearts of fans. Known for his fierce determination, on-ice vision, and unparalleled leadership, Messier’s return to the franchise signals a new era of ambition for the Blueshirts.

At 64, Messier has remained close to the game through broadcasting, mentorship roles, and youth development programs. However, this is his first official return to the Rangers in an organizational capacity since retiring in 2004.

What His Role Means

According to Rangers GM Chris Drury, Messier’s role will focus on leadership development, player mentorship, and strategic input with the coaching staff.

“Mark is not only one of the greatest leaders the sport has ever seen — he’s also a student of the game,” Drury said. “Bringing his mind, his presence, and his heart back into this locker room will be transformative.”

While Messier won’t be behind the bench as head coach, sources confirm he will have an active hand in player development, locker room culture, and mentoring the coaching staff, particularly during high-pressure playoff scenarios — something Messier knows intimately.

Fan Reaction: Electric

Social media exploded within minutes of the announcement, with hashtags like #MessierReturns, #TheGreatOne, and #MSGMagic trending across platforms. Fans flooded the Rangers’ official pages with celebratory messages, many sharing memories of the ’94 Cup run and expressing hope for a new chapter of greatness.

“We’re going all the way. If Messier’s in the building, anything’s possible,” tweeted one fan.

What’s Next?

With a promising young roster and high expectations for the 2025-2026 season, the Rangers are clearly signaling their intent to contend — not just compete. And with Messier back in the fold, the team may have just added its most valuable asset yet: belief.
