Netflix has just dropped the trailer for “The Underdog,” an inspiring new documentary chronicling the rise of Seattle Kraken center Matty Beniers. The film, which hits the streaming platform on May 15, has already generated massive buzz among hockey fans and sports documentary enthusiasts alike.
Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Lauren Hodge, “The Underdog” traces Beniers’ journey from an overlooked prospect in Massachusetts to becoming the first-ever draft pick for the Seattle Kraken and a key figure in the NHL’s newest franchise. The documentary features never-before-seen footage from his early playing days, exclusive interviews with teammates, coaches, and Beniers himself, and a deep dive into the mental and physical challenges he overcame to become a star.
“Matty Beniers represents everything we love about sports – perseverance, humility, and heart,” said Hodge during the press announcement. “This isn’t just a story about hockey. It’s about what it means to prove everyone wrong and still stay true to who you are.”
Kraken fans are already calling “The Underdog” a love letter to Seattle hockey. With a combination of cinematic visuals and raw storytelling, the documentary promises to be a standout addition to Netflix’s growing library of sports content, following the success of series like “Quarterback” and “Drive to Survive.”
Matty Beniers, now a fan favorite and an NHL All-Star, remains grounded in the face of growing fame. “I never imagined something like this,” he said in a promotional teaser. “I just wanted to play the game I love. This film means a lot to me.”
“The Underdog” debuts globally on May 15, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.
