Netflix has just announced the official release date for its latest sports documentary, “The UnderDog”, a powerful and nuanced look at the legacy of Adolph Rupp, the legendary and controversial coach who turned the University of Kentucky into a basketball powerhouse. The documentary will premiere globally on July 15, 2025, exclusively on Netflix.

Produced in collaboration with SpringHill Entertainment and directed by Emmy Award-winner Ava Wallace, “The UnderDog” goes beyond the hardwood to explore Rupp’s influence on the game, the tension of the civil rights era, and the athletes who helped define a generation — including standout forward Jack “Goose” Givens, who is featured prominently in the film.

Givens, who led Kentucky to the 1978 NCAA Championship and scored 41 points in the title game, offers never-before-seen insight into the complexities of Rupp’s leadership, mentorship, and his polarizing public image.

“This is a story about legacy — the good, the bad, and everything in between,” Givens says in the trailer. “We’re not just telling history. We’re facing it.”

Netflix describes the documentary as “a gripping, unflinching look at how one man’s vision helped build a basketball dynasty — and how the struggle for racial justice shaped its story.”

Featuring interviews with former players, civil rights historians, and modern-day coaches, “The UnderDog” is expected to ignite conversation and draw strong viewership from both sports fans and cultural commentators alike.
