Netflix has officially announced the global release date for one of the most anticipated sports documentaries of the decade. Titled “The Underdog,” the film chronicles the incredible rise of Stephen Curry, the iconic Golden State Warriors guard and one of the most transformative figures in basketball history. The documentary is scheduled to premiere worldwide on September 20, 2025.

“The Underdog is more than just a basketball story,” said Netflix Sports Documentaries Executive Producer Lauren Hines. “It’s a story about defying odds, rewriting history, and the relentless belief in oneself when the world counts you out.”

An Inside Look at the Making of a Legend

“The Underdog” takes fans on a deep journey through Stephen Curry’s life, starting with his overlooked high school recruitment, his breakout college years at Davidson, and his doubted entrance into the NBA. The film details how he rose from being deemed “too small” for the league to becoming a four-time NBA champion, two-time MVP, and the league’s all-time leader in three-pointers made.

The documentary features never-before-seen footage, exclusive interviews with teammates, family, coaches, and global icons such as:

  • Draymond Green

  • Klay Thompson

  • Steve Kerr

  • Dell and Sonya Curry

  • Barack Obama

  • LeBron James

  • Kevin Durant

Curry himself serves as executive producer alongside Emmy-winning director Ava DuVernay, ensuring that every moment captured is both authentic and emotionally resonant.

“I’ve always embraced the underdog mentality,” Curry says in the trailer. “They told me I’d never make it — and now we’re telling that story for every kid who’s ever been doubted.”

Themes of Faith, Family, and Fierce Determination

Unlike typical sports biographies, “The Underdog” digs deep into Stephen Curry’s off-court life, from his Christian faith and commitment to family, to his work in philanthropy, tech investments, and empowering youth through SC30 Inc. and the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation.

Fans will also see vulnerable moments — Curry’s injuries, his critics, and the personal battles he faced behind the spotlight — painting a full picture of the man known affectionately as “Chef Curry.”

Fan Anticipation at an All-Time High

Within hours of the announcement, #TheUnderdogNetflix was trending across social media platforms, with fans and celebrities expressing their excitement.

“Curry is my GOAT. Can’t wait to see this. Been underrated his whole life and still made history,” tweeted NBA star Jayson Tatum.

“A must-watch for every basketball lover and dreamer,” wrote actress and entrepreneur Issa Rae on Instagram.

Netflix also confirmed that the film will be available in over 190 countries, with multi-language subtitles and voice-overs, making it one of the company’s biggest sports documentary launches since “The Last Dance.”
