August 16, 2025 — In a move that could reshape the future of professional basketball, the National Basketball Association (NBA) held a closed-door meeting this weekend to discuss the possibility of expanding the league with another franchise. While details remain limited, league insiders confirm that expansion is once again at the forefront of NBA leadership’s agenda.

Why Expansion Now?

The NBA has not added a new franchise since the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets) joined in 2004, bringing the league to its current total of 30 teams. For years, Commissioner Adam Silver has hinted at the potential for expansion, particularly as the league has enjoyed record-breaking revenues, global audience growth, and a surge in young talent.

“This is about long-term vision,” said an anonymous source familiar with the discussions. “The league is stronger than ever financially, the player pool is deep, and there are markets hungry for professional basketball.”

Possible Destinations

Several cities have long been rumored as top candidates for an expansion team:

  • Las Vegas, Nevada – With the recent success of the NHL’s Golden Knights and the NFL’s Raiders, Sin City has quickly become a major sports hub. The NBA already hosts its Summer League there, making Vegas a strong contender.
  • Seattle, Washington – Still reeling from the loss of the SuperSonics in 2008, Seattle has consistently topped fan wish lists for expansion. The city already has a state-of-the-art arena (Climate Pledge Arena) and a passionate fanbase.
  • Mexico City, Mexico – The NBA has been steadily growing its international presence, and a Mexico City team would mark a groundbreaking step in making the league truly global.
  • Louisville, Kentucky – A basketball-rich state with a strong tradition, Louisville has pushed for an NBA franchise for years.
