that has stunned the sports world and touched the hearts of many, Montreal Canadiens defenseman David Savard announced today that he is donating 100% of his recent $12.9 million bonus and sponsorship earnings to launch a bold new initiative aimed at combating homelessness in the city of Montreal.
The donation will directly fund the development of 150 permanent supportive housing units and provide 300 emergency shelter beds, addressing one of the city’s most urgent and visible crises.
“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up,” Savard said during a press conference held this morning at the site of the future housing complex. “I knew if I was ever in a position to do something big, something meaningful — this would be it. This city has given me and my family so much. Now it’s my turn to give back in a real, lasting way.”
A Legacy Beyond the Ice
Savard, 34, known for his grit on the ice and leadership in the locker room, has quietly supported local charities throughout his career. But this marks the largest personal donation ever made by an active NHL player to a social cause.
Working in partnership with Mission Bon Accueil and Accueil Bonneau, two leading Montreal-based nonprofits, the initiative — named “Unité Montréal” — will focus on permanent housing with wraparound services, including mental health care, addiction support, and job readiness programs.
Construction is set to begin early next year, with the first phase of housing expected to open by winter 2026.
Community Leaders React
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante praised Savard’s contribution, calling it “a historic act of compassion and leadership.”
“David’s donation is more than generous — it’s transformative,” said Plante. “This is the kind of action that can change the trajectory of lives and inspire a movement across the city and beyond.”
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also issued a statement: “David Savard’s commitment to the greater good sets a powerful example for athletes everywhere. This goes beyond hockey — this is humanity at its finest.”
Teammates Rally Around the Cause
Several Canadiens players, including team captain Nick Suzuki, expressed pride and admiration for their teammate.
“We all know Savvy is a warrior on the ice,” said Suzuki. “But this shows what kind of person he really is off the ice. We’re already talking as a team about how we can help support the initiative too.”
A Call to Action
While Savard insists the spotlight should remain on the issue, not him, his donation has already inspired waves of public support and donations to the associated charities.
He concluded his announcement with a heartfelt message:
