BREAKING NEWS: Mark Pope Has High Hopes for Otega Oweh if He Pulls Out of NBA Draft and Returns to UK….

In a statement that has stirred excitement among Kentucky Wildcats fans, new head coach Mark Pope expressed optimism about the potential return of standout guard Otega Oweh, should he decide to withdraw from the 2024 NBA Draft.

Oweh, a 6-foot-5 sophomore who transferred from Oklahoma, declared for the NBA Draft earlier this spring while maintaining his college eligibility. As the May withdrawal deadline approaches, speculation has mounted regarding his future—and Pope made it clear that if Oweh returns to Lexington, he will be a cornerstone of the Wildcats’ revamped roster.

“Otega has the kind of toughness, versatility, and defensive presence that fits perfectly with how we want to play,” Pope said. “If he chooses to come back, I truly believe he can be one of the top two-way players in the SEC and help lead us into a new era of Kentucky basketball.”

Pope, who took over the program following John Calipari’s departure to Arkansas, is tasked with reestablishing Kentucky as a national powerhouse. With the transfer portal in full swing and a shifting roster, having a player like Oweh in the fold would provide much-needed experience and athleticism.

Known for his defensive tenacity, slashing ability, and improving shot, Oweh averaged 11.4 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last season at Oklahoma. His physical style and energy on both ends of the floor have drawn attention from scouts, but questions remain about his consistency from beyond the arc and his overall polish at the next level.

For Pope, though, the decision may come down to more than just numbers.

“Beyond the stats, he brings a competitive edge we need,” Pope said. “He’s a winner. If we get him back, we’re building around him.”

As the draft deadline nears, all eyes in Big Blue Nation are now on Oweh. Will he bet on himself at the next level—or return to UK to elevate both his game and a program entering a new chapter?
