ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has heaped high praise on freshman linebacker Justin Williams, calling him “the kind of alpha you need” at the position. The Bulldogs’ head coach made the remarks during spring practice, highlighting Williams’ leadership qualities, physicality, and relentless work ethic.
Williams, a five-star recruit from Texas, was one of the crown jewels of Georgia’s 2024 recruiting class. Since arriving in Athens, he has quickly made a name for himself with his aggressive playing style and natural instincts on the field. Smart noted that Williams has embraced the challenge of playing linebacker at one of the nation’s top programs and is already displaying the mentality needed to thrive in Georgia’s system.
“He’s got that dog in him,” Smart said. “Justin doesn’t back down from competition. He’s smart, physical, and willing to learn. That’s the kind of alpha you need leading your defense.”
Georgia has a history of producing elite linebackers, and Williams is expected to be the next in line. With key departures on defense, including standout inside linebacker Smael Mondon Jr., Williams has an opportunity to earn significant playing time in his first season.
“He’s still young, but he’s got all the tools,” Smart added. “It’s about putting in the work every day, and so far, he’s showing us that he’s ready to do that.”
With Georgia aiming for another national championship run, the emergence of Williams could be a major storyline to watch. If he continues to impress in offseason workouts and fall camp, the freshman phenom may find himself playing a crucial role in the Bulldogs’ defense when the 2025 season kicks off.
