In a major move that signals the Indiana Pacers’ continued reshaping of their roster, General Manager Chad Buchanan announced today that the team has signed veteran center Jonas Valančiūnas, just days after the departure of longtime anchor Myles Turner.
The news comes amid a wave of changes in Indiana, as the Pacers prepare for a new era without Turner, who recently joined the Milwaukee Bucks on a four-year deal. Turner’s exit left a significant gap in the frontcourt — one that Buchanan wasted no time in addressing.
“Jonas brings the toughness, rebounding, and interior scoring that we need,” Buchanan stated at a press conference Monday morning. “His experience, leadership, and physical presence in the paint will be critical as we continue building a team that can contend in the East.”
Valančiūnas, 33, spent the last three seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans and averaged 12.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in 2024–25. Known for his traditional post play, high basketball IQ, and durability, he is expected to offer a steady veteran presence for a young Pacers squad headlined by Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin.
A Strategic Fit
With Turner’s shot-blocking and perimeter shooting out of the mix, Valančiūnas provides a different but complementary skill set. While not known for his three-point range, he offers a strong post-up game and elite rebounding, which should open up second-chance opportunities for Indiana’s perimeter shooters.
Head Coach Rick Carlisle also weighed in: “Jonas plays with physicality and smarts. He’s a perfect fit for the system we’re developing — one that blends speed, space, and size.”
More Moves on the Horizon?
The Pacers aren’t done yet. Buchanan hinted that the front office is still exploring trade and free-agent options, particularly to shore up the team’s perimeter defense and bench depth. With nearly $12 million in cap flexibility remaining and a young, attractive core, Indiana remains an active player in the summer market.
