BREAKING NEWS: Former Warriors Head Coach Don Nelson Sends Letter to Joe Lacob, Expresses Desire to Return to Team

In a stunning and unexpected development, former Golden State Warriors head coach Don Nelson has formally expressed interest in returning to the organization. According to sources close to the team, Nelson delivered a handwritten letter to Warriors owner Joe Lacob this week, outlining his vision and desire to “reignite the spirit and identity” of the team he once led.

Nelson, 85, is widely regarded as one of the most innovative minds in basketball history. He coached the Warriors in two separate stints (1988–1995, 2006–2010), and remains the winningest coach in NBA history by total regular season victories. Though he’s been away from coaching for over a decade, Nelson’s passion for the game appears undiminished.

In the letter, which has not yet been released publicly, Nelson reportedly criticized the current direction of the franchise and offered to step in—either in an advisory role or potentially even as interim head coach—should the organization be open to a change.

“I built this team to run, to shoot, and to disrupt the game,” Nelson allegedly wrote in the letter. “If you need someone to bring the magic back, I’m ready.”

Warriors owner Joe Lacob has not issued an official response but is believed to be “surprised but respectful” of the offer, according to team insiders.

This shocking move comes amid ongoing uncertainty about the team’s future. With Steve Kerr stepping down earlier this offseason and the Warriors entering what many see as a transition period after missing the playoffs, Nelson’s proposal—though unconventional—may strike a nostalgic chord with fans and executives alike.

It is unclear whether Nelson’s return would be seriously considered, but the very idea of his comeback has already sent waves through the basketball world.
