In a remarkable act of generosity and social responsibility, former Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green has donated his entire $12.9 million in recent bonuses and sponsorship earnings to launch a groundbreaking homeless shelter initiative in the Bay Area.
The initiative, titled “Back Home Bay”, will fund the construction of 150 transitional housing units and provide 300 shelter beds for those experiencing homelessness across San Francisco and Oakland.
“I’ve seen the effects of homelessness firsthand growing up, and I knew I had to do something real,” Green said in a press conference held this morning.
“This isn’t charity—this is about dignity, community, and doing what’s right.”
The veteran NBA forward, who retired from professional basketball earlier this year after a legendary 13-season career, has long been vocal about his roots in Saginaw, Michigan, and the hardships he witnessed growing up in under-resourced neighborhoods. His latest donation marks one of the largest single-player philanthropic acts in NBA history.
The Initiative
The Back Home Bay project is a collaborative effort between Green, local government leaders, non-profits, and housing developers. The funding will cover:
- Construction of 150 transitional housing units
- A 300-bed emergency shelter facility
- On-site mental health services, job readiness training, and childcare support
- Community kitchens, wellness centers, and case management services
Local Leaders React
San Francisco Mayor London Breed praised the initiative, calling it a “game-changer.”
“Draymond Green’s contribution is not only generous—it’s visionary. He’s setting a new standard for what athlete activism can look like.”
Oakland City Council member Treva Thompson added,
“This is what community reinvestment looks like. Draymond grew up with us, and now he’s giving back in the most profound way.”
More Than Just Money
Green emphasized that his involvement won’t end with the donation. He plans to actively participate in planning, community outreach, and long-term oversight of the initiative.
“This isn’t a one-and-done. I’ll be on the ground making sure this stays human. These people are our neighbors—not statistics.”
Draymond Green, a four-time NBA champion and known as the heart and soul of the Warriors dynasty, continues to redefine his legacy off the court. With this act, he joins the ranks of athlete-activists using their wealth and platform to push for real societal change.
The Back Home Bay initiative is scheduled to break ground in early 2026, with the first phase of housing expected to open by the end of next year.
