In a powerful display of leadership and compassion, University of Michigan football standout Will Johnson, a rising star of the Go Blue Club, has made headlines by investing $4.7 million of his own money to convert a historic property near campus into a state-of-the-art shelter for the homeless.
Johnson, a cornerback known as much for his on-field intensity as his off-field humility, announced the initiative earlier today, revealing that the shelter will offer not only beds and meals, but also mental health services, job training programs, and addiction recovery resources.
“This community has given me everything—my education, my team, and a future I never dreamed of,” Johnson said during a press conference. “Now it’s my turn to give something back, especially to those who’ve been forgotten or left behind.”
The property, a 12,000-square-foot home just north of downtown Ann Arbor, was originally built in the 1920s. Johnson plans to preserve much of its original architecture while outfitting it with modern amenities designed to support transitional housing.
Blue Club officials expressed deep admiration for Johnson’s decision, noting that he has long been involved with community outreach and social justice causes through the university’s student-athlete leadership council.
“This goes far beyond football,” said Coach Jim Harbaugh. “Will is showing what it means to be a leader and a role model. He’s changing lives.”
Construction and renovations are expected to begin in early summer, with the shelter slated to open before winter 2025. The facility will operate in partnership with local nonprofits and is expected to serve over 100 individuals annually.
As Johnson’s career continues to rise both on and off the field, his legacy is already being cemented—not just in trophies, but in transformative action that speaks to the heart of what it means to be a Michigan Wolverine.
