In a shocking development that has sent ripples through the NHL community, Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice has been suspended indefinitely by the league and sentenced to seven years in federal prison, according to official court documents released early Monday morning.
The charges stem from a lengthy federal investigation into financial misconduct, including tax evasion, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice, sources close to the case confirmed. Maurice, 58, was taken into custody late Sunday night after being found guilty on all counts by a jury in the Southern District of Florida.
According to prosecutors, Maurice had allegedly been involved in a multi-year scheme involving the misappropriation of team funds and the concealment of income through offshore accounts. The scheme reportedly involved shell companies and false invoicing linked to sports consulting contracts that never existed.
“This is a dark day for hockey and the NHL community,” said Commissioner Gary Bettman in a statement. “The league holds its members to the highest standards of conduct. We are cooperating fully with federal authorities and are taking the necessary steps to protect the integrity of the game.”
The Florida Panthers organization released a brief statement shortly after the verdict:
“We are aware of the legal proceedings involving Paul Maurice and are fully cooperating with the NHL and law enforcement. Effective immediately, Mr. Maurice has been relieved of all coaching duties. Our focus remains on our players and the upcoming season.”
Maurice had been at the helm of the Panthers since December 2022, leading the team to back-to-back playoff appearances, including a Stanley Cup Final run in 2023. His sudden downfall has left players, fans, and league officials in disbelief.
Assistant coach Jamie Kompon is expected to serve as interim head coach while the organization evaluates long-term options.
Further details regarding the sentencing and potential appeals process are expected to emerge in the comings days
