In a stunning and nostalgic move that has sent waves of excitement across the basketball world, the Indiana Pacers have announced that franchise legend Rik Smits is returning to the team — this time in the front office. The beloved former center, affectionately known as “The Dunking Dutchman,” has been appointed as the Senior General Manager, marking a powerful new chapter in the Pacers’ storied legacy.

Smits, who spent his entire 12-year NBA career with Indiana, was a central figure in the team’s rise to prominence during the 1990s and early 2000s. Known for his soft shooting touch, towering 7-foot-4 frame, and quiet leadership, Smits helped lead the Pacers to numerous playoff appearances, including their historic run to the 2000 NBA Finals.

“This is home, and it always has been,” Smits said during his introductory press conference at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. “I’m honored to be back with the Pacers organization in a new capacity, and I’m ready to build something special here once again.”

Team owner Herb Simon praised the hire as a move that combines basketball expertise with deep institutional loyalty.

“Rik knows what it means to wear the blue and gold. His understanding of the game, his intelligence, and his calm, strategic approach are exactly what we need as we look to the future,” Simon stated.

Smits will work closely with current President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard and Head Coach Rick Carlisle to strengthen the team’s roster, oversee player development, and help shape long-term organizational goals. Sources within the team say Smits will also play a key role in international scouting — an area where his European roots and deep network may offer a competitive edge.

The announcement has sparked a wave of fan excitement across Indiana and beyond, with social media platforms lighting up in celebration.

“Bringing Rik Smits back is like welcoming family,” one longtime fan tweeted. “He’s part of what made the Pacers great, and now he’s here to help us get back to the top.”

The Pacers, who have shown promise with a young and dynamic core, are hoping Smits’ return can be the catalyst that brings championship aspirations back to Indianapolis.

As one chapter closes for the former All-Star on the court, a new one begins — in the boardroom, where the Dunking Dutchman is once again ready to make a towering impact.
