In a monumental announcement that is sending shockwaves through the hockey world, Edmonton Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson has confirmed that legendary center and former franchise cornerstone Wayne Gretzky will officially return to the organization in 2025 as the Chief Hockey Officer (CHO).
Gretzky, widely regarded as the greatest hockey player of all time, will take on a senior executive role overseeing the team’s hockey operations, player development, and strategic direction both on and off the ice. This marks Gretzky’s most significant return to the franchise since retiring as a player and briefly serving in advisory roles over the past two decades.
“Wayne’s return to the Oilers is more than symbolic—it’s a strategic move that signals our commitment to excellence,” said CEO Jeff Jackson. “His unmatched hockey IQ, leadership, and deep connection to this city make him the perfect person to help shape our future.”
Gretzky expressed both humility and excitement at the opportunity to contribute once again to the team where he built his Hall of Fame legacy.
“Edmonton will always be home,” said Gretzky. “I’m honored to return to this organization in a meaningful way, and I look forward to working with Jeff, our staff, and our players to bring another Stanley Cup to this incredible city.”
The announcement comes amid a transformative period for the Oilers, who are looking to build on recent playoff runs and capture their first Stanley Cup since 1990.
