In a powerful display of community leadership, former Detroit Red Wings captain and NHL Hall of Famer **Steve Yzerman** has pledged **\$7.9 million** toward transforming vacant properties in Detroit into **safe, supportive housing for homeless youth**.
The initiative, in collaboration with several local nonprofits and the city’s housing authority, aims to **renovate more than 30 abandoned homes** across Detroit’s east side. Once completed, the homes will provide **long-term shelter, counseling, and career development resources** for young people facing housing insecurity.
“I’ve always believed in giving back to the city that gave me so much,” Yzerman said at a press conference this morning. “Detroit shaped me—not just as a player, but as a person. This project is about giving young people the stability and support they need to shape their own futures.”
The project is expected to break ground in **late summer 2025**, with the first homes opening early next year. Yzerman’s investment will also fund trauma-informed care programs, educational support, and job training for the youth residents.
City officials praised Yzerman’s commitment. “This is the kind of leadership Detroit needs,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “Steve Yzerman isn’t just a hockey hero—he’s a community hero.”
