In an incredible act of generosity, former Dallas Mavericks star and NBA champion Michael Finley has donated $21 million to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, to support the renovation of the Kohl Center — the home of the Badgers’ basketball programs.
Finley, who enjoyed a celebrated NBA career spanning over a decade, announced the gift during a special event held on campus Monday morning. The $21 million contribution is one of the largest individual donations in the university’s athletic department history and will go directly toward upgrading facilities, expanding player development areas, enhancing fan amenities, and modernizing the overall experience at the Kohl Center.
“This university shaped me both as a player and a person,” Finley said during his speech. “Giving back to Wisconsin is my way of saying thank you and making sure future generations have even better opportunities than I did.”
University officials praised Finley’s commitment, calling it a “transformative gift” that will have a lasting impact not only on athletics but also on the university community as a whole. A portion of the renovated facility will be named in Finley’s honor, recognizing his legacy both on and off the court.
